Indonesian mine rehabilitation work stepped up

Both of Indonesia’s major integrated tin producers are increasing the amount of ex-mining land on Bangka island they are reclaiming this year. “This is one of the responsibilities of mining companies, so the land can be used for other purposes outside mining,” the PT Timah’s corporate secretary, Abrun Abubakar, told Reuters. “It can be for farming, housing and tourism.”

Abubakar said Timah could spend up to 30 billion rupiah, or $3.3 million, this year to convert 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of exhausted mines on Bangka....

Bangka conference on sustainable mining

An environmental organisation founded by the Bangka Belitung provincial government in Indonesia is hosting an international conference and exhibition in August with the theme of “Sustainable Mining for the Future”. The Green Babel Foundation will host the BABEL I-CONEX 2008 event in Pangkalpinang, Bangka island on 21 – 24 August.

The conference will include papers on best mining practice, environmental management and corporate social responsibility, with keynote speakers including several government ministers and representatives of international mining companies.
