ITRI is working to establish the long term sustainability of the tin industry globally and has a number of on-going activities designed to promote the safe and responsible production, use, re-use and recycling of the metal and its inorganic compounds. The high proportion of artisanal mine production in the tin industry presents unique challenges and projects on sustainable production therefore look at a combination of key social, economic and environmental impacts in addition to e.g. energy use. Other investigations on recycling rate of tin, and possible new recovery technologies, aim to promote more efficient use of natural resources. While regular surveys of tin uses and stock levels helps us understand issues of sustainability in the supply chain. Together with our work on REACH, other activities also help improve the scientific understanding of interaction of tin with humans and the environment.
