EURL-Ecvam publishes status report on alternative methods

Chemical Watch reports that the Joint Research Centre's EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL Ecvam) has published a "status report", summarising all of its activities between May 2014 and September this year.

In this time, EURL-Ecvam has developed adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) relevant to neurotoxicity, toxicity via disruption of the endocrine system and liver toxicity.

Most of these have been added to an AOP knowledge base-wiki, developed by the JRC, in conjunction with the US EPA and the OECD.

German classification system aims to reduce fish testing

Chemical Watch reports that German scientists have devised a classification system that could help to reduce the number of fish required for chronic toxicity testing, as part of an integrated testing strategy.

In work commissioned by the German Federal Environmental Protection Agency (UBA), Martin May and Stefan Hahn, from the Fraunhofer Institut für Toxikologie und Experimentelle Medizin (Fraunhofer ITEM), compared data on 240 chemicals held in the OECD's eChemPortal and a UBA chemical safety database.
