Malaysia Smelting Corporation recorded a small pre-tax profit of RM8.7 million (US$1.8 million) in the first quarter, following the loss of RM35.1 million in the fourth quarter of last year. Metals X diversifies as Renison tin production set to expand
Metals X, which has a 50% stake in the Renison tin mine, is planning to diversify its portfolio by merging with Westgold Resources. Renison is Australia's only significant tin mine, and is poised to expand production to 7,000 – 8,000 tpy of tin-in-concentrate. The planned merger will add Westgold's Central Murchison gold project and the Rover 1 copper-gold project to assets which already include Renison, the Rentails tin tailings project and the Wingellina nickel project.

Deal close on Glencore Bolivian mines
The Bolivian state mining holding company, Comibol, is close to finalising new joint venture agreements for several mines operated by Glencore International subsidiary Sinchi Wayra, including the Colquiri zinc-tin mine. "By May 17 or 18 we could be ready to sign the new contract with Glencore.... Minsur production falling
Official March mine production data released by Peru's mining ministry showed increases in output of most base and precious metals, with the exception of tin. March tin production was reported at 2,294 tonnes, down by 6.6% compared to the same month of 2011. First quarter tin-in-concentrate production amounted to 6,607 tonnes, 2.7% lower than in the same period of last year.
