High temperature lead-free solders – a review

ITRI Colleagues Nick Hoo and Jeremy Pearce have contributed to a new and extensive review of lead-free high temperature soldering technology.

Legislation has already banned the use of lead in solders for mainstream applications, but lead in solders for high-temperature applications (>85% lead, melting points typically between 250 and 250C) is still exempt in RoHS2, the European Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

China R&D advances could boost solder research

Already there are more than 200 research teams working on solder-related technology in China. Now a new article has highlighted a rapid growth in materials science technology in the region that could further boost development of new electronics interconnection solutions.
